Theproblem is most likely the plastic gear wheel in the motor. Over time the teeth break. One temporary fix is to remove the motor and access the large plastic round gear by removing the cover.
Theroof on my 98 Spider will only open manually but will close automatically as normal. I've had 2 Alfa garages in Dublin fob me off (clearly didn't want the hassle but did all the easy things).
