Heres my assessment: 1290 beats 890 on-road. 1290 handles better and feel more stable/planted on the road. 1290 is more comfortable for long distance, less buzzy, better performance. For long touring, 1290 wins hands down. That isn't to say the 890 isn't good on the street too, the 1290 is just better in every area.
