If it's easier I don't mind removing all trace of Adobe Reader DC and starting again, but ensuring that I only have the 64 bit version to start with and so don't end up with both again.

Can confirm. Even as far as Reader opening, but the title bar of the window just says "Adobe Acrobat". Go into default programs, set PDFs to open with Acrobat, still in reader-mode. Go in to uninstall Reader, it's not there. Reinstall of Acrobat solves it though.
